TIPS FOR A BETTER BREW

The most important areas the coffee consumer needs to control for the best brew are:

1) FRESHNESS- The time between roasting and brewing can be one of the most important factors in reflecting a coffee’s flavor.

bulletBe sure to buy your coffee from a quality small batch coffee roaster like Maui Oma so you can be assured of the freshest product and eliminate the costly and time consuming middle man. Coffee should be packaged in a airtight, moisture proof container to maintain its flavor.
bulletBuy your coffee in whole bean form and grind just prior to brewing
bulletStore your coffee in an airtight container in a cool dry place. Refrigeration is not necessary.

2) THE SCOOP ON GRINDS- Matching the proper grind to your brewing method impacts a coffee’s flavor. An improper grind can create over-extraction or under-extraction resulting in a bitter to weak / watery taste. Matching the right contact  time for the best possible extraction is essential. Here is a guide to grinds for the most popular brewing methods.

Brewing Method - Grind

bulletTurkish - Extra Fine
bulletEspresso - Fine
bulletDrip - Medium
bulletFrench Press - Medium Coarse
bulletPercolator / Toddy - Coarse

3) WATER QUALITY- Ninety nine percent of your cup of coffee is water. The better the water quality the better the cup quality. Bottled or Purified water makes the best coffee.  Hard or alkaline water does not directly harm flavor but will mute natural  flavor acids.
